First, you need to demonstrate to us that you have considered this seriously -- please read some books and be ready to answer questions about Freemasonry, our Tenets and Principles, our History... what we mean to say is that our Lodge is not joined simply on a whim. We're looking for the right kind of man: and that could be you, if you work at it... and if you already have then you are already in the right mindset to become a Mason!
There is an old saying which is on the verge of becoming cliche: to be one, ask one. That really is the only way to become a Mason -- anyone who asks and demonstrates that seriousness of determination, that thirst for knowledge, that zeal for humanity -- is eligible for membership in the Craft. To wit, there are a few guiding principles that must be adhered to:
- You must be a man (we're a fraternity).
- You must be of the mature age of at least twenty-one.
- You must believe in a "Higher Power"
Point number three is perhaps what trips up most people. It is because of this point that some people believe Freemasonry to be a religion: it is not; however, we are religious in our work (as in, "I religiously brush my teeth" -- I religiously go to Lodge). We are spiritual without promoting a particular spirituality; this is unnerving to those who believe there is only one valid path to Deity and all others being relegated to falsehood, or worse. We do not see things quite so simply: whereas each and every religion teaches Truth, no religion has a monopoly on all Truth. With this in mind, we leave the words "Higher Power" to your reflection and if indeed you believe in your Heart that there is Divinity in this Universe then you are eligible. We leave it at that, no muss, no argument, no "correcting you" to "believe in a certain way."
