From the East - May 2009

Time and science have wrested from us the mystery of things. No longer is it divine will that guides the moon across the night sky or raises the winds or lowers the tides. It is pure physics. Using all means necessary, we have distilled the miracle of the universe into mathematical formulas and computer models. The unseen can now be seen and the wonders of the world fit into a test tube. As our endeavours lead to a burgeoning list of medical breakthroughs and technological advancements, so too have they impacted the way in which we view ourselves and our surroundings.

Great seekers for truth are we Freemasons, and the ancient sciences are fundamental to our craft. We recognize the benefits that come with knowledge, yet we also understand there exists one place far beyond the trenchant gaze of science – an unexplored universe within each of us that is much more significant and no less mysterious than the star-filled heavens. The way is dark and the path circuitous, yet the stalwart brother will not falter in his quest to learn of the inward man. He is the traveler and the discoverer. Each thing learned reveals another mystery, and never will he know all there is to know. Yet he is happy for the test and earnest in his pursuit. The benefits of his efforts will extend to those around him because that new wisdom will make him a better man.

It is a challenge posed to every man of the Order to seek that which lies within and nurture it for the good of all. Aided by the ancient rites of the institution and the lessons they convey, a man will be in a better position to learn something of himself. With that insight and the bond he has established with his brethren, he is more apt to find contentment and an enhanced ability to develop meaningful relationships with others.

Precipitous paths and wild oceans present no barrier in our interminable quest for knowledge. The heavens have been laid bare by the all-seeing eye of our machines that probe and poke and penetrate the dark expanse of the universe. That which was magic has been displaced by cold, calculating science. Yet, the brethren of the Order know and understand that there is one place science cannot conquer – that magical and mysterious universe within.

Brightest Blessings,
